GeneWeb is a free genealogy program widely used for online databases. It stores data in a text format with the .gw extension. Genea World can read these files directly in the browser.
The GeneWeb format in short
A .gw file describes families with “fam” blocks, listing the couple then the children between the “beg” and “end” markers. Each person is identified by surname, first name and an occurrence number.
It is a different format from GEDCOM, but it describes the same information: individuals, unions and lineage.
Open your .gw in Genea World
Go to the App page, then drag your .gw file or select it. Genea World converts it on the fly and displays your tree. Everything happens locally: nothing is sent over the Internet.
Convert GeneWeb to GEDCOM
Once your file is open, use “Export” to download a standard GEDCOM (.ged) version, compatible with most genealogy software. Genea World thus acts as a free, private .gw-to-GEDCOM converter.
