A family tree contains very personal information, sometimes about living people. Before entrusting it to an online service, a few precautions are in order.
Why it is sensitive
Names, birth dates, places, family ties, occupations: this is private data. Once uploaded to a server, you no longer fully control how it is used or how long it is kept.
This is especially true for the living people in your tree, protected by GDPR in Europe.
Good habits
Favour tools that process your data locally, without sending it. Read the privacy policy: what does the service collect, where is data stored, is it shared?
Always keep a copy of your GEDCOM file on your own device. It is your backup and your independence.
The Genea World approach
Genea World is designed never to transmit your data: your file is read, displayed and edited entirely in your browser. No database, no sign-up, no upload. Your ancestors stay with you.
